Anyway, the Bourn Adventure Headquarters sits on 36 acres, with the majority of that being wooded area. Depending on the route, we have approximately two miles of walking trails set up through the woods. We also have large, group camping space available in two large fields along with smaller camp sites available in the woods. All of the sites are designed for primitive style camping and some areas are accessible by vehicle, which works out perfect if using a rooftop tent or pull behind trailer. We also have a large stocked pond, a big shop, and other outbuilding on the property. This space will allow us the opportunity to grow Bourn Adventure even more. In the future, we hope to host plenty of events, such as mod days (wrenching on your rig in the shop), range days, (yes, we plan on putting in a shooting range), education days (classes geared for the off-road community) and of course, camp nights! We wanted a way to personally thank them for their order. Our solution was to create Bourn Adventure postcards. This allowed us the opportunity to give each order a personal touch while continuing to share adventures from all over the world. We breathe new life in our postcards by periodically changing destinations and showcasing new locations. Each postcard series is assigned a number and runs for a limited time. Once that particular postcard is gone, it is done! So far all of the postcards have been a big hit and some people even started collecting them! Aside from that, customers have told us of conversations generated by the postcards hanging on their refrigerator or in their office. Hearing that something so simple could spark curiosity and encourage adventure brings a smile to our faces. The world is a large place, and life is short. Together, we can accomplish much more than we ever could alone. -Bourn Adventure Author: Baker If you are not familiar with our beginning, please read our story by clicking here: About Us: Bourn Adventure Gear We ventured into the patch world thanks to boredom, a cold beer, and our Toyota FJ Cruiser, which was parked in the driveway, waiting for history to unfold. One day while I was going through some of my military gear I stumbled upon my old unit patch from my first deployment with the 25th Infantry Division. Brief sidetrack! In 2004 my unit wore the Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) which required our patches to be sewn on. Shortly after arriving in Iraq, some of us began field testing what was known as the Close Combat Uniform (CCU) which was an improvement on the DCUs we were issued. One of the new features with the CCUs was the ability to attach patches to the uniform using velcro. The CCU was later phased out for the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), which is currently in use along with the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP). headliner and magically it stayed up there thanks to the fuzzy fabric. I immediately realized this was why I was put on the earth; to show the human race that patches were rad again. This does not work on all vehicles, but the Toyota and Lexus headliners are Velcro friendly. Occasionally, a patch will drop from the roof and land on someone in the vehicle. Usually when this happens, it scares the ever living crap out of whoever it hits! This led Ashlie and I to have an interesting conversation about those experiences following the roll over in our Toyota FJ Cruiser, which at the time had about 70 patches on the headliner. - Ashlie: "Remember when we'd be driving the FJ and a patch would randomly fall from the roof and scare the crap out of us?" - Me: "Do you think we scared the crap out of the patches when we rolled the FJ and fell on them?" To read our article about the accident in the FJ, please click here: The Roll Over
What started as a cool way to display our designs and adventures has now grown into a large market filled with creative and talented makers. Although our patches were initially marketed to Toyota owners for use on their headliners, we have now expanded our design spectrum to include a wide variety of themes. People all over the world rock Bourn Adventure Gear patches on their jackets, bags, hats, hiking equipment, photography equipment, camping gear, tactical vests, vehicle headliners, and much more. We have physically carried our patches with us on adventures all over the world. They have traveled to places like Petra, Zion National Park, the Dead Sea, Arches National Park, Wadi Tiwi, and Niagara Falls, to list a few. To us and many other people, our patches are more than just designs, they are a lifestyle! Bourn Adventure Gear started as Bakes FJ Gear in late 2012. It was Bourn out of necessity for Toyota specific stickers and later patches (read our: Patch Story). At that time, it was difficult locating unique stickers or decals that were Toyota or off-road themed, so we began to make our own. One of our first designs was the Challenge Accepted sticker, followed by our My Toyota Rocks! sticker, which paid homage to the 1980's Toyota colors made famous by racing legend Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart. I remember the yellow, orange, and red colors splashed across the Toyota race trucks when I was younger but did not truly appreciate them until getting our FJ Cruiser.
Those three colors mean a lot to me and influenced many more unique Toyota themed designs to include: Toyota Mountains, Desert Yota, Toyota Sunrise, Retro Capture the Journey, and Toyota Action. The idea then was to make stickers just for us. We did the design work in house and outsourced production to another business online. Just like most companies, there was a minimum amount required for production. Since we only needed one or two stickers for ourselves, we decided to give the extras away to our friends in the Bayou State Land Cruiser Association (BSLCA), sister Toyota clubs or other off-road related communities. At the time, we had no intention of making additional production runs of designs as this was more for us. After handing out all of our extra stickers people started contacting us asking if we could send them some too. Flattered by all the requests, we obliged and made more, which we mailed out for free. We did not anticipate what would soon follow. More and more people reached out to us asking if they could have or even purchase stickers and when new designs would be available. Luckily for us, we already had BakesFJ.com (our FJ Cruiser travel blog) and all that was needed on our end was to add an online store section which we called Bakes FJ Gear. We continued cranking out new designs and operating under Bakes FJ Gear for several years until we rebranded in 2017 to Bourn Adventure and Bourn Adventure Gear following a roll over in our Toyota FJ Cruiser. Shortly after that, we separated the two websites, allowing them to grow and operate independently.
We also started a Bourn Adventure postcard series which is included with every order. Each postcard series showcases a beautiful picture on the front from one of our adventures and brief description of the journey on the backside. More importantly, it allows us the opportunity to personally connect with each individual who places an order. To learn more about our postcards, please click here: Postcard Adventures We now have over 250 product options available in our store, which covers a wide variety of design themes, to include: adventure, freedom, tactical, ect. Our goal is to continue to create great products that are enjoyed and used by people all over the world. A Toyota ('82 Celica) was my first car and it gave me my sense of freedom. Many years later, a Toyota ('12 FJ Cruiser) gave me my desire for adventure! We have designs now that pertain to everything, but our inspiration is still driven by those beautiful Toyota colors. We don't just design adventure based products, we live them! -Bourn Adventure Gear Author: Baker GalleryBourn Adventure started as Bakes FJ which was a small business built around our 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser. While owning the FJ, we traveled to all lower 48 states and parts of Canada on several different road trips (some more than 10,000 miles long), attended numerous off-road events, and met thousands of people along the way. Our Toyota FJ Cruiser was simply named "The FJ" and gained popularity in the off-road community due to our travels, pictures, and a few silly videos we put out. Sadly, the FJ was totaled in January of 2017 after I put her belly up on a snow-covered road in Oregon.
Ashlie and I decided we did not want the roll over to be the end of our story or the end of Bakes FJ. In fact, we wanted to start a new chapter! Bourn Adventure is just that. Since the rebrand, we have expanded our travels, website, and are working on new and exciting places to visit. The name has changed, but the adventure remains the same! One of the definitions for Bourn is, "a goal or destination." We figured that paired well with our adventurous spirit and desire to share experiences with others. If we can influence just one person to explore the world around them, we accomplished what we set out to do. If someone can not physically take an adventure, then we hope they can see the world through us. To date, we have traveled about 110,000 miles just on road trips within the United States and many thousands of miles more internationally. Some of our adventures include seeing natural beauty at places like: Grand Canyon National Park, Arches National Park, and Acadia National Park. We have also visited man-made areas like Petra and Jerash (both in Jordan) that date back thousands of years. To see pictures of our adventures all over the world, please click here: Travel: Our Adventures Our goal is to continue to grow our collection of places visited across the world and deliver that content to you via our website, social media pages or emails. Although there is a world of information on the internet, it is not always easy to navigate. Our desire is to bring all of our travels, adventures, and experiences together into one, easy to find place, which could help identify locations for a future trip. Our hope is; by using information found on our website it makes your next adventure that much easier to plan, execute, and enjoy.
