Mackinac Island, MI

Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island sits between the Upper peninsula (UP) and Lower peninsula (LP) of Michigan and is located in Lake Huron.  The only way to and from the island is by ferry or personal boat. That is until the lake freezes over during the winter and people use snowmobiles as transportation.

The ride there provides a spectacular view of the "Mighty Mac" (connects the UP and LP) which is a suspension bridge that spans a total of almost five miles in length and has a road height of approximately 200 feet.
Once you step foot off the ferry you soon realize Mackinac Island is unlike most places found in the United States. The use of motorized vehicles on the island is prohibited (some exceptions apply). Movement of people or goods on the island is done using bicycles, horses, or walking. If you hail a taxi most, likely it will be a horse-drawn carriage.

The majority of structures on the island are constructed from wood. There are several different style types to include Gothic, Victorian, and Native American. One of the more famous building is the Grand Hotel which can been seen from the water while traveling to and from the island (depending on your route). The Grand Hotel has been used as a venue for many special event and has hosted several United States Presidents throughout its history.  It has also been featured in a few movies.

While on the island you can find a plethora of shops along with several good restaurants and fun bars. Just because Mackinac Island is a step back into time does not mean they do not have cold drinks! If you like freshly made fudge or other sweet treats, you will be at home here. The thoroughfare just off of the ferry docks is littered with delicious candy shops that allow you to sample their eats before committing to certain type. Literally, you will be like a kid in a candy store!
