Savannah, GA

Savannah theater
Savannah was establish in 1733 and is the oldest city in Georgia. Due to the age of this city there is a lot of history to be found here, including the Savannah Theatre (pictured on the left). It initially opened its doors in 1818, making it one of the oldest theatres in the United States.

Although the size and shape of the theatre has changed several times throughout its history due to fire damage or renovations to modernize it, the spirt of the original theater still exists today and is considered an important part of the city to so many residents.

In our opinion, one of the reasons why the theater still exhibits its historical significance in this area is because the city of Savannah has done a remarkable job preserving and maintaining that "old time" feel with the architecture and original city layout.
Savannah is a city of public squares with 22 still remaining today. Although very similar, each one provides a unique experience. For instance, some squares are still surrounded by old houses and filled with large, over hanging moss covered Oak trees. When you sit in the center and look around, it is easy to let your imagination transport you to another time, especially when a horse and buggy passes by.

One of the more famous squares is Chippewa, which is also where the Savannah Theatre is located, but not the only reason why this square is so well known. Every year thousands of people visit Chippewa Square to possibly hear a story so riveting that it captivated the world and started a chain of restaurants. The individual who told it is no longer there, but his character lives on and continues to entertain those who visit the area.

It is here where Forest Gump sat on a bench waiting for a bus and spilled his heart out to those who would listen. The movie bench has since been removed and placed into a museum and the traffic now flows in the original direction (reversed for the movie), but Chippewa Squares still keeps his story alive.

Savannah is also known for its haunted tours and pub crawls, along with its trolly tours. If you want to have more romantic, personal experience and still learn about the city, we would recommend taking a horse-drawn carriage ride.  River Street is another great area to explore as it is filled with shops and eateries and sits on the edge of the Savannah River.

We have visited Savannah several times and we always enjoy ourselves here. We find the city is rather easy to navigate and enjoyable to walk, especially with all the squares, which makes this area feel more open and welcoming. We look forward to our next trip here, especially since Bourn Adventure and travel goes together like peas and carrots!
