Adding some extra 12V outlets has been on my project list for over a year. I wasn't sure where I wanted them installed though. Because of this, I never got around to this project. That all changed when I read a fantastic write up by Tyler Perkins. After reading his write up, I knew how and where I wanted them installed. In that write up, Tyler recommends using the Blue Sea outlets, which I did.
I installed 2 Blue Sea 12V outlets and 1 Blue Sea dual USB outlets. I decided to mount 1 12V outlet and 1 USB outlet on the top of the center console. I also installed 1 12V outlet on the passenger side of the center console. All outlets are wired for constant power directly to the a blue sea fuse block which is wired to on of my batteries. Before doing the install, I removed the passenger and drivers seats and then the center console. Removing the seats isn't necessary, but I wanted the extra space.
Because I found Tyler's write up very informative, I got with him and asked if I could link it to my website. He was kind enough to say yes. If you are looking to install some auxiliary outlets, I recommend reading Tyler's write up (click on the link below).
In my opinion, having extra outlets that are wired for constant power is one of the most functional and cheapest mods you can do to the FJ.
*Update. At the end of 2014 I took a large road trip where I covered 9,629 miles and was on the road for 31 days. Most of that trip, I had a least 1 passenger with me. Within that time, we were charging numerous GoPro batteries, several phones, 2 iPad's, flash lights, a wifi hotspot and other devises. The additional 12V outlets and dual USB port were vital in keeping everything charged.
These simple mods are without a doubt, one of the most useful mods I have done.
