Washington D.C.

Picture
Washington D.C. is located on the Potomac River and is our nations capital. It is a relatively small area, but do not let the size fool you, it has that big city vibe.

The majority of the people who work and live in this area commute from Virginia or Maryland, which are the two border states. Most of the work force in Washington D.C. are employed by the United States government or hold jobs with companies in support of the government.
We enjoy visiting Washington D.C. because of the architecture and history found throughout the city. It seems like everywhere you look there is another impressive structure that draws you closer so you can see the intricate detail within the buildings masonry. This leads us into a brief side track and correlation between another impressive area. On past adventures we have visited ancient Roman ruins that still have large, free standing stone edifices and to us, some of the buildings found in Washington D.C. have that same impressive size characteristics shared with old Roman cities. We imagine looking out over that city after walking up a large stone staircase and then becoming dwarfed in size by massive stone columns in present day Washington D.C. must have been a similar feeling to the people who did the same thing thousands of years ago while visiting Rome.

What Washington D.C. lacks in size, it more than makes up for in educational and historical destinations. It is very difficult to experience everything this city has to offer in a day, let alone a week. Some of the top visited sites here are, the National Archives, Capital Hill, the Botanic Garden, the Korean War Memorial, the National Air and Space Museum, the Rosevelt Memorial, the National Gallery of Art, the White House, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, National Archives, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Ford Theater. This of course is a small list of places to see.

We find Washington D.C. is very easy to navigate on foot. Some destinations are fairly far apart, but catching a cab or other means of transportation is relatively easy. Just like so many other cities, great food is easy to find and they have a good selection of different cultural restaurants to choose from. If you find yourself here, we highly recommend visiting Arlington National Cemetery (in Virginia), which is not far from downtown Washington D.C. Walking through the grounds there is a humbling experience and witnessing the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is something you will never forget.

We are blessed to have so many people around the globe rocking Bourn Adventure Gear. We wanted a way to personally thank them for their order.

Our solution was to create Bourn Adventure postcards. This allowed us the opportunity to give each order a personal touch while continuing to share adventures from all over the world. We breathe new life in our postcards by periodically changing destinations and showcasing new locations. Each postcard series is assigned a number and runs for a limited time. Once that particular postcard is gone, it is done!

We selected The Washington Monument in Washington D.C. to be featured as our BA 2019 postcard series #9 and just like other postcards before it, it was a big hit! Customers have told us of conversations generated by the postcards hanging on their refrigerator or in their office. Hearing that something so simple could spark curiosity and encourage adventure brings a smile to our faces.
